Fisher family papers, 1817-1911.

Chiefly correspondence of five generations of the Fisher and allied Pleasants and Armstrong families. Earliest items consist of correspondence of Samuel Rhoads Fisher (1794-1839), his wife, Ann Pleasants Fisher (1796-1862), and their parents in Pennsylvania. Included are a letter from Andrew Jackson to President James Monroe recommending Samuel Rhoads Fisher for a government position and a letter from Stephen F. Austin to Fisher discussing political events in Mexico and Austin's position on slavery in Texas. The largest amount of material is related to Fisher's oldest child, Samuel William Fisher (1819-1874). Letters are primarily among family members and friends, and particularly between Fisher and his wife, Eliza Ophelia Fisher (1823-1877), and their children. Letters discuss family matters and local events including hurricanes which struck Matagorda (1875) and Galveston (1900). Papers also include the presidential pardon issued to Samuel W. Fisher following the Civil War, a marriage license, and a Matagorda newspaper (1848). The more recent material relates to Nannette Fisher Armstrong (b. 1857) and her family and includes some genealogical and biographical materials.
